Journey back to a time when Māori voyagers ruled the seas and experience first-hand the ancient wayfinding vessel that survived epic journeys on water – navigated by the knowledge and movement of the sun, the moon, the stars, the waves, the winds, clouds and the birds.
The spectacular beauty of its traditional design, the incredible power of its construction and the awe-inspiring stories of its legendary feats, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that belongs to you.
Waka Hourua, translated to a double-hulled canoe, is a traditional Māori vessel that carried the first settlers to the land of the first light - Tairāwhiti Gisborne, New Zealand.
One of only nine double hulled wakas of this type in the world, you are invited to board Waka Hourua and learn first-hand, the ancient art of wayfinding that lead to the discovery of Aotearoa New Zealand, as the last piece of the Polynesian Triangle around 1,000 years ago.
We welcome you to Tairāwhiti Gisborne - the first coast to greet the sun, where the first landing by Captain James Cook in 1769 took place and where the first meeting on land occurred between Māori and Pakeha.
