Will I get to paddle?

The Waka Hourua ‘Tairāwhiti’ is not a paddling waka. It is a double hulled sailing waka that can hold up to 30 passengers and crew. On the Sailing Experience you will be invited to get involved and sail the waka!

Can children come on this experience?

Children under 5 years old cannot come on the sailing experience. Children aged 5-15 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

The cultural experience is not recommended for children under 5 years old but they are welcome on board and will be free of charge.

I can’t swim, can I still come on this experience?

Yes, if you join the Cultural Experience the waka does not leave the berth.

On the Sailing Experience, life jackets will be provided and a full safety briefing will be given.

What do I need to bring?

Bring a hat and something warm to wear. We would also recommend bringing a camera to take photos the end of the tour.

Will food and drink be provided?

We suggest bringing a refill bottle as we have water onboard. Food will not be provided.

What kind of mobility access do you provide?

At this stage we do not have mobility access.
